Cranial Sacral Therapy

The human Craniosacral system is made up of the bones, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues of the cranium and spinal area. More specifically: the central nervous system: brain, spinal cord, cranial bones, vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, membranes, connective tissues and cerebrospinal fluid.

When functioning optimally and normally, the Craniosacral system is adaptable, fluid, mobile and supportive. Enabling fast and efficient movement of electrical impulses between the brain and body.

Sometimes, we develop adhesions, blocks and compensatory patterns within the system which may interfere with its optimal functioning. These changes will affect the body in different ways and may in turn appear as physical pain or dysfunction or as mental or emotional limitations.

These changes in the Craniosacral system may happen for many reasons, including: trauma, physical injury, infection, toxicity, surgery, emotional and psychological stress or birth trauma.

Cranial Sacral therapy is a gentle, hands on approach to assessment and treatment which is directed by the innate healing ability of the body. The therapist will support the unwinding and changing of existing adhesions, constricted areas and dysfunctional patterns in the body, encouraging balance, health and restoration of the tissues. Releasing these old patterns and deep adhesions often allows for greater ease through the whole body, including the musculoskeletal system.

Often, patients will begin to see improvements within 4-6 treatments. Your therapist may also integrate visceral manipulation and myofascial therapies as a complement to the Craniosacral modality.
